True Crimes Of The 1950s: Gladys Martin & Tony Brubaker, The Mother and Son Murderers of 1957
This is the first episode in our 1950s true crime series.
For this first episode, we cover the October 1956 case of 35-year-old Hammond, Indiana housewife Gladys Martin and the murder of her second husband, 32-year-old steel worker Robert Martin, and the role that her 16-year-old son Anthony Brubaker (the oldest of two children from a previous marriage) played in the odd, and tragic, case.
In addition to vintage 1950s news clippings that covered the story, true crime historian and filmmaker, ASP-TV’s Kwame Welsh shares insights via Zoom interview.

"Is Grease accurate for the 1950s?" This video answers that question, with a brief introduction to the real-life 1950s-era youth subcultures that were satirized in producer Alan Carr's 1978 film adaptation of Jim Jacobs' and Warren Casey's 1971 stage play. Fifties-era "bopping" or fighting youth gangs of New York and Chicago (the original setting of the stage version of Grease), Philadelphia's ...

      You haven't looked at the other videos uploaded to this channel, have you? I ask that question without malice and without sarcasm. The Sportsmen/Forsyth Street Boys gang war of August 23, 1959 involved gun violence in which a 15-year-old girl lost her life, an 11-year-old innocent bystander was shot in the face, and a 12-year-old boy was stabbed to death. The victims I just mentioned were Theresa Gee, 15-years-old, Manuel Cintron, 11-years-old, and Julio Rosario, 15-year-old. Let me repeat, that was in 1959. It was also one week before the "Capeman" murders of August 30, 1959, in which two innocent 16-year-olds, Bobby Young and Tony Krzesinski, lost their lives. Drug cases include the 1953 heroin bust conducted against a teen gang led by Salvatore Pennino. I love the 1950s. If I did not, I wouldn't have started this channel, and I wouldn't have shared this Australian TV teen dance show that was not unlike our own "American Bandstand" or the various other TV teen dance shows of that time (Alan Freed's "The Big Beat," The KPIX Dance Party, Larry Kane, Jack Spector, Buddy Deane, etc.) But.... We can be honest, and state that the negative side of human behavior has always been with us, and if we're really going to be honest, violent crime was most certainly a concern of 1950s society. Here is one of the other videos uploaded to this channel: ua-cam.com/video/CmA_gCLpVdQ/v-deo.htmlsi=PVCWkB5xjzr3aQKP We are currently working on a 1950s true crime series. Below is a rough draft of the intro that will accompany each episode, the extra blank space at the end will be where the title will be placed: ua-cam.com/video/J1wgbkx1bwU/v-deo.htmlsi=YKQ3t_WGHqKBD5h2 You'll see that yes, drugs (heroin) and killers (Charles Starkweather, Donald Bashor, Carl Eder, Harvey Glatman, Melvin Rees, The Egyptian Kings and Dragons street gangs, The Green Street Counts, Robert Kunkel, The Brooklyn Thrill Killers led by Jack Koslow, school shooter Billy Ray Prevatte, the unsolved December 1956 murders of the Grimes sisters in which even Elvis Presley had to make a statement, as the girls were Elvis fans, the home invasion murder in 1959 of the Clutter family, which was the basis for Truman Capote's true crime novel "In Cold Blood") most certainly did exist between 1950-1960. In fact, I started this channel deliberately to..."correct"...that (mistaken) view of 1950s society, that violent crime was "non-existent" and was "not a concern" during the 1950s, that is mentioned in your comment. Please, if we're going to discuss 1950s history, which is the focus of this channel, let's keep it accurate and honest.

    • @Mike_The_1950s_Historian
      @Mike_The_1950s_Historian Місяць тому

      An excellent idea as that is a cold case from Maryland I believe. Like the Grimes sisters, the family has yet to find closure. I think Carolyn was 14 when she was murdered and I'm going by memory, so forgive me if the details are hazy, but local youth gang culture was initially blamed, but it seems that was unlikely? One of the first episodes that I am working on right now is the 1959 case of 12 year old Joanne Yamaguchi in Hawaii. In that episode, I will be mentioning the Grimes sisters out of Chicago from December of 1956 and I will also mention Carolyn, being another infamous example of a young innocent as a victim of a possible pedophile. As for doing a full episode on her, yes I think I should, so thank you for that suggestion. (It has been a while since I've looked into it so I will review the materials I have.)

      @Mike_The_1950s_Historian Місяць тому

      @@-alleycat-1778 excellent, and I also used to believe that "none of these things happened back then, unlike today" mostly because that's what I was told, for years, by individuals who had grown up during that time. When I started doing research, that's when I realized that human nature is the same, and unfortunately, that also includes the dark, evil, side of human nature. I also realize that most former young people of the 1950s and early 1960s, generally, didn't have much interest in the news events of their youth. As older senior citizens however, many of them now take an active interest in current news. Because many of them (not "all," but many) didn't pay attention to the news stories back then, but they do now, the perception is of course that violent crime is a "recent" phenomenon, when unfortunately, it most certainly is not. Besides Carolyn, the Grimes sisters, and Joanne Yamaguchi, other innocent victims of that time period at the hands of human predators include 14-year-old Robert Peterson, 13-year-old John Schuessler, and 11-year-old Anton Schuessler in 1955, 12 and 13 year-old brothers Paul and John Logan in 1957 (like Joanne Yamaguchi, their attacker had actually been released from prison on molestation charges, before committing that triple murder), 9-year-old Candy Rogers in 1959, 6-year-old Karen Mauk in 1954, 4-year-old Joseph Zarelli in 1957 (still unsolved), and 12-year-old Patty Gross, in her own home in 1959, while her brother and sister were tied up during a home invasion. (So much for the idea that "No one ever had to worry about locking their doors back then.") I know that you know this, but what I'm writing below is for anyone else who might be new to this channel. It's very common in nostalgic recollections to state that such incidents "never happened back then," but only by being honest about history can we learn how to hopefully reduce such incidents, or at the very least, avoid being victims ourselves. Besides, those 1950s-era victims should be remembered, while their perpetrators should be rightfully condemned. Sorry I just had to write that. I will definitely do an episode on Carolyn, while mentioning her in the upcoming episode on Joanne Yamaguchi.

I have an older brother who appeared on Bandstand. It must have been an earlier episode because when my baby sister saw him 'in the television box' she threw a screaming fit and demanded mummy get him out of it. lol. During the show, Brian Henderson says that Eddie Cochran was killed in a car crash last week (April 17th, 1960), meaning this Bandstand Episode was recorded in late April, 1960. Johnny Burell/Beryl? has a fantastic voice, but so far I haven't been able to find anything about him online! (Correct spelling of his surname might help, there?) CHEERS! 😊

    The story of lovely starlet Judy Tyler is one of the sadder ones in Hollywood. This and "Jailhouse Rock" were her only two movies. She would never get to enjoy the final prints of eiither one as she lost her life tragically at the way-too-young age of 24...just after finishing her work with Elvis 😢

      Oh you mean songs like "Teen Angel" or "Patches?" Those types of teen tragedy songs? It's definitely a good idea.👍

      @@Mike_The_1950s_Historian yes! Teen Angel, Patches, Running Bear, Endless Sleep… as said, the 50’s was a much darker and more violent time for teenagers than our Rose-Tinted Nostalgia Glasses would have us believe. The first sub-cultures were born from this decade and with it, the first Teen Tragedy songs. Haha. These tracks were like their equivalent of todays SoundCloud Emo Rappers like Lil Peep or Juice WRLD. 🤣 It was a big enough trend that it lasted into the early 60’s.

      Yes that's correct. David Van Pelt disputes some of Cruz's claims regarding his time in The Mau Maus in his book "Brooklyn Rumble." That said, Cruz's work in gang intervention is important. I leave it to readers and researchers to interpret the evidence and draw their own conclusions from what David puts forth.

    So, are there any full episodes with the original audio?

      Unfortunately, this one episode without audio, along with a few photos, seems to be all that survived of the show.

    Based on the novel “Harrison High” by John Farris, whose later novel “The Fury” was filmed in 1978 by 20th Century-Fox. The musical score was by John Williams!
